All documents stored in Aerofiler are protected by a permissions system, and only users with appropriate permissions can access a document to view, edit and/or delete it.
Aerofiler will determine the permissions that a user has to a specific file by applying rules in the following order: (1) file level permissions, (2) Document Type permissions, and (3) the user's Role.
Aerofiler will determine the permissions that a user has to a specific file by applying rules in the following order: (1) file level permissions, (2) Document Type permissions, and (3) the user's Role.

The base level of access that a user has to Aerofiler is defined by a user's Role, which is set by clicking the relevant icon in Settings > Organization > Users > Manage Organization Users. The different levels of role, and their permissions are:
- Administrator - the highest level of authority, this role allows management of team member profiles (setting their role and Document Type permissions) and editing and deletion of files
- Edit - users can edit file fields
- Read - users can read the relevant document and its metadata, but will not be permitted to make any changes
- Limited User - users have no access to documents by default. Permissions need to be added using file-level or Document Type permissions

The second level of permissions is set by clicking the relevant icon in Settings > Organization > Users > Manage Organization Users. An administrator can select to limit a user's access to Document Types and apply the following permissions:
- Edit - users can edit file fields
- Read - users can read the relevant document and its metadata, but will not be permitted to make any changes
- None - users have no access to the document
- <Based on User Role> - this will remove Document Type permissions, and Aerofiler will user either file-level or role-based permissions to determine whether a user can access a file
Document Level Permissions
The most granular level of permissions is set at the individual document level. When viewing an individual document, click the "Permissions" button to set the permissions that are applicable to that specific document. Permission levels are the same as for Document Type Permissions.
